Litcham School – Food Technology Room

The Challenge

Litcham School desperately needed a total refurbishment of their existing food technology environment. The new room needed to help encourage new students to take up the food technology subject and be an attractive environment to learn in, as well as delivering all the practical requirements needed for lessons.

Litcham required the room to have a bright modern feel with new appliances and a dedicated area for teacher demonstrations and theory lessons. The room’s existing layout did not provide adequate storage areas for the preparation and teaching materials. There were minimal work surfaces for the students and insufficient works stations. Furthermore, students also were not facing the teacher when doing theory, which was less than optimal.

The Solution

BrookhouseUK worked closely with the head of the department alongside the school’s business manager to reconfigure the room to achieve the best utilisation of space and satisfy the requirements within budget.

A chevron-style island design with a perimeter workstation provides the needed storage, work surfaces and workstations, as well as giving the room a new ‘wow’ feel. In order to be able to accommodate this design it required the structural wall at the end of the room to be removed.

By being creative with the layout and design, BrookhouseUK was also able to achieve a fantastic area for both theory and practical lessons. Students can now face the teacher during theory and have large work surfaces for the practical work.

The design also incorporates floor-to-ceiling storage along with tray storage to give the teachers plenty of space to organise their equipment. This bright, light, modern space with stylish blue finished handleless kitchen units creates the perfect impression and helps attract more students to take up the subject.

The Misbourne School – Food Technology Room

The Challenge

The Misbourne School needed a Food Technology room to be created from one of their classrooms and this needed to be done urgently during Summer 2022 but could start in early July before the school broke up.

The school wanted to attract more students to the subject, and as such, the room needed to be as attractive and practical as possible to help with the update of the food technology subject from the new term.

As this project was repurposing a classroom, the design needed to allow for the fact that service access was limited to the perimeter of the room and changing this was cost prohibitive.

The Solution

BrookhouseUK designed the room with perimeter workstations but also incorporated island units coming off from the side, which enabled services to be fed from the sides and did not require expensive M&E reworking.

A teaching wall was included in the design and this was located to enable the existing projector to be used on it along with full-length cupboards providing much-needed storage space.

White Solid Grade Laminate (SGL) worktops complemented the grey cabinetry, and the new floor was finished in a stylish whitewash oak vinyl. Misbourne School were delighted with the finished result, and the students and teachers alike could not wait to get the lessons underway.

Alfred Salter School – PODs and Acoustics

The Challenge

Alfred Salter School already had acoustics installed in their smaller hall but now wanted a similar installation in their large hall too.

Due to the high vaulted ceiling in the room, noise was constantly an issue, whether the room was being used for assemblies or for staff meetings.

They wanted to use colorful materials that were not only practical at noise reduction but also looked bright, smart and fun.

The Solution

BrookhouseUK supplied and installed hexagonal-shaped acoustic panels in various bright colours, which are cheerful and eye-catching as well as hugely reducing the echoing that was typical whenever large numbers of students were in the hall.

Individual tables and chairs were also installed with ‘Hush Board’ panels which ensure that any meetings are now able to take place without echo issues. These panels are in the same bright colours as the hanging panels so the hall design is fully cohesive in style.

Alfred Salter loved the design which really transformed their hall environment.

Colnbrook School – Teaching Wall

The Challenge

Colnbrook School, a special needs school, needed to repurpose their existing ICT Suite into a therapy room and this needed to include a teaching wall.

The school had already decided on the specification which was designed to include everything that was required for teaching in this new specialist space.

The Solution

BrookhouseUK supplied and installed the teaching wall during term time. The finish was white high gloss drywipe along with blue Gratnell storage trays.

Open shelving and lockable cupboards made sure that the use of space was maximised perfectly and sliding whiteboards covered the interactive screen when not in use, offering dual functionality. Décor panels ensured that the finish was sleek and aesthetically pleasing, with panels scribed to the ceiling.

Colnbrook School were delighted with the results, which complemented the calm therapy space needed for their students.

East Coast College – Science Laboratory

The Challenge

East Coast College required a refurbishment of one of its offices into a new Science Laboratory for degree-level students. They needed an updated Prep Room and a ‘Simulated Hospital Ward’ as students were required as part of their training to role play as if in a hospital environment.

The Science Laboratory needed to accommodate 16 students per lesson and have a layout that enabled students to learn effectively and enough space for practical lessons.

The work was scheduled to take place during the Easter holidays.

The Solution

BrookhouseUK created a very modern design using ‘boomerang-shaped’ island work stations and with perimeter work stations, all including sinks, swan neck taps and gas taps.

The units, floor and walls were all designed in clean white and grey finishes which created the laboratory look and feel that the college required. A teaching wall was included which had sliding dry wipe boards over an interactive screen and a teacher station in front which created a perfect teaching environment. Lockers and open shelving added practical storage space.

The new Laboratory has proved to be a great success and has given the college an outstanding space to help with their science students’ learning.
